Volunteer Opportunities around the Grayslake area

Posted on Jun 4 2025 - 9:00am

Many of the rank advancements require service hours, as do some of the merit badges. While we strive to provide service opportunities as a Troop, there may be times when you'll want to volunteer on your own (or with your family).  The list below is not meant to be comprehensive. Use it as a jumping off point to look for other opportunities in areas that interest you!  Like to be outside? Look at the township garden, forest preserves, or park districts. Interested in pets? While many local rescues require volunteers to be older, it’s worth digging around to see if there are opportunities for scouts. Check your religious institution if you attend one regularly, there may be options there - in summer, many churches ask middle school students to be junior counselors for their VBS programs.

Volunteer at Lord of Glory

As you may have noticed yesterday, Lord of Glory is hosting a rummage sale this weekend. It looks like there are still volunteer spots open for this week, to  help with set up and sale times as follows:

Free Digital Merit Badge Resources Now Available

Posted on May 20 2025 - 4:02pm

Great news for Scouts, leaders, and parents! All merit badge pamphlets are now available as free PDFs on the Scouting.org merit badge website (https://www.scouting.org/skills/merit-badges/).  This upgrade gives everyone free access to these resources while offering printed versions through Scout shops. The digital format makes these materials much easier to access, particularly for Scouts in rural and remote areas.

Posted on May 19 2025 - 5:24pm

For those attending Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan this summer, the process for ordering T303 shirts and camp gear will be different from previous years.

New AI and Cybersecurity Merit Badges Coming

Posted on May 19 2025 - 5:23pm

Exciting updates are on the way for Scouts BSA!

  • A brand-new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Merit Badge is set to launch next month. Developed with Myridius and other industry experts, the badge will explore AI fundamentals, automation, ethics, deepfakes, career paths, and hands-on activities.
  • Supporting the badge is Scoutly, an AI-powered chatbot designed to help Scouts complete requirements. Scoutly is currently being tested in seven councils and is expected to be available nationwide by August 1.
  • Also coming later this summer: a Cybersecurity Merit Badge! Stay tuned for more details as the release approaches.

Both badges will feature digital resource guides—complete with videos and interactive tools—to make learning more engaging and accessible, especially for today’s tech-savvy Scouts.
